Vermont Restaurant & Dining Reviews - The Vermont Food Critic Returns!

Filed under: Vermont Dining Reviews — info at 9:26 am on Friday, August 4, 2006

standingskunk.jpgA few years ago, I had a little fella called the Vermont Food Critic featured on Vermonter.com. Remember him? Well, he’s back and so are his reviews. He’ll let you know where he likes to eat and which places stink. Of course, that’s one skunk’s opinion! (or more accurately a compilation of other’s reviews)
He actually took a lot of heat and generated a lot of discussion in terms of those who agreed with him and those who did not. The whole thing was kind of funny because people seemed to be more concerned and passionate about his reviews than any other topic going on in Vermont, at any given time.

Well, for better or worse folks, he’s back! Post reviews here and our skunky friend will edit them. Even if they do stink!

Taste of Burlington Restaurant- I don’t know where to start!?! Wonderful service and food! This was my 4th trip to Taste… My date and I dined out side after drinks at the bar- The new bartender Kip is quite an exuberant fellow! My “Champlain Sunset” martini was fabulous as it was made with freshly squeezed juice- My companion had a “Blueberry Breeze” made with Stoli Blueberry Vodka and garnished with sugar sweet fresh blueberries… For dinner, we dined outside under the awning and watched a beautiful sunset over the Adirondacks- Appetizers were the crab cakes (FULL of meat with very little bread crumbs!!!) and the grilled quail stuffed with whiskey soaked cherries and toasted walnuts. Dinner ws short billed marlin from Hawaii and the Black Angus ribeye steak- (a little over the top at 18oz… but I was having the fish so whatever;) I don’t agree with the comments of “pricey” regarding Taste. The setting, decor, service (not snoooty or over bearing- very familial- perhaps that is the turnoff for some???) and especially the wonderful dishes are well worth the cost. The kicker this evening- (8/25/06) was a show of “fire twirlers” in the parking lot. I didn’t know what was going on when I saw the flashes through the windows. It turned out to be some of the employees (so the chef told me) practicing thier “poi” which is the term for spinning burning balls of cotton on the ends of chains- They were syncronized like a dance- What a unique way to end the evening with my dessest wine! I just can’t get enough of this place-

Old Brick Cafe, Williston, VT In our opinion, the service was poor and the food was bland. We went several times due to it’s convenient location and the service has always been lackluster to poor. One server was actually rude to my wife. We won’t eat there again.

My husband and I recently went to a restaraunt in Ludlow,VT called Killarneys and we were completely surprised by the service and price of the drinks. The service was not nearly up to par and the drinks are way over priced! Who would believe that a cozy restaraunt in Vermont wold charge 12 dollars for Martinis!!! Its not Manhattan people….Anyways needless to say we walked away unimpressed!

Last year we tried the Inn at Shelburne Farms for dinner. The place is absolutely gorgeous and we expected dining to be equally impressive but it was not. The food was ok but didn’t justify the price. The bad part was that the rainbow trout I ordered was not thoroughly cooked. Even the bacon wrapped on the outside was nearly raw, so back it went. Got it back and the fish was still uncooked inside, so we left. Service was fine.
In July 2007, we decided to give breakfast a try and it was pretty good. However, the service was awful. We had to get our own butter and serve our own coffee because the waitress seemed to forget we were there. It wasn’t even very busy.
On August 18th, 2007 we accepted a breakfast invitation to meet some friends there. Service was much better but the pancakes were uncooked with liquid batter in the middle. Back it went to the kitchen. A new batch of pancakes came back but were tough and dry. Must be they decided to take no chances. My friend got half way through his pancakes before he also came across the uncooked batter. We paid the bill and left.
There are much better places to eat in Shelburne. Cafe Shelburne (reviewed in Vermonter.com) for dinner and the little coffee shop at Harringtons, next door to Cafe Shelburne has some terrific, fresh pastries.

India House Restaurant: I went with my husband a month ago and we didnt like the food. The food was not fresh and really smells bad. It is definetely few days old and totally spoiled. I wish the restaurant should be checked for the food quality.
