Mysterious sighting on Lake Memphremagog

"It looked like a giant otter."
Translation by Johanne Laporte of an article published in La Tribune on May 10, 2000 and written by Gilles Dallaire:
Magog Township
Adrien and Claire Rompré have been living on the east bank of Memphremagog Lake for 30 years.
They have seen boats of all sizes sail past their home.
So when, last Friday night (May 5) Adrien who was watching from his living room window noticed the wake between his dock and the red buoy bobbing 100 metres away from shore, his first thought was that it was from a boat, maybe his neighbour's.
However, something just wasn't right: there was no boat in sight to cause such a wake.
"It was something quite long, quite big also because the wave was at least a foot high. I couldn't make out what it was. I went outside on the balcony, binoculars in hand. What I saw was at least five or six feet long with a dark brown adult size head and big eyes. I called out to Claire who was working on her computer to come out and take a look as there was something unusual happening", related this retired Montreal police sergeant who carries his 88 years in a way that most of us would want to if ever we reached that age.
Adrien and Claire Rompré closely watched this thing for at least four minutes, five even; in fact, until it reached a small island only a mere 2000 feet from their shore. This is when it disappeared under water never to be re-seen. By the time it had made its final dive, they had seen its head above water at least three times.
"It wasn't hard to follow it: it advanced fairly slowly and the lake was calm. In addition, it is still daylight at 7:00 p.m. this time of the year." He tried to explain what he had seen but isn't quite sure what it was. "It's an animal, that's for sure. Was it a fish? Certainly not. I don't think that it was a reptile either. I'd say it looked like a giant otter, like the ones I saw in a documentary presented on the Discovery Channel." he commented.
And what if that mysterious creature that diver Jacques Boisvert has been pursuing for decades without ever actually seeing it, was a giant otter ...this hypothesis is just as good as any other one.
