Recreation in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

There are several country clubs in the area for golf enthusiasts. Newport, Orleans and Barton each have their own unique clubs. The Northeast Kingdom has two ski areas, Jay Peak and Burke Mountain. Both are highly recommended. Don't miss the Jay Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in October! Check out this huge list of Northeast Kingdom recreational activities.

Winter - Vermont skiing is fantastic! Terrific alpine skiing & snowboarding awaits at Jay Peak Ski Area (800-451-4449) or Burke Mountain (800-541-5480) in W. Burke, Vermont.

Jay Peak

Cross-country enthusiasts will find Hazen's Notch Association (802-326-4799) or Craftsbury Outdoor Center (800-729-7751) in Craftsbury, Vermont a delightful way to enjoy the splendor of a winter day. Ski Vermont!
Enjoy a little Vermont skiing history and some articles about Northeast Kingdom ski areas which are now part of the past. Thanks to Jeremy Davis of New England Lost Ski Areas.

Snowmobiling - Island Pond has to be the mecca for snowmobile enthusiasts of all ages. People come from all over the US and Canada to enjoy the fun. Contact VAST (802-229-0005) for trail conditions and more info.

Travel tip: Use caution when driving through Island Pond. The local Constable is extremely adherent to all traffic violations. Obey all signs and rules to the letter, to avoid getting a ticketIf you're traveling to Vermont from out-of-state, you should check out this driving and speed trap info page.

State Parks - Explore our beautiful lakes and mountains. Island Pond's Brighton State Park and nearby Maidstone Lake are enjoyable by man or moose alike. In the Barton, Orleans, Westmore region, no visit is complete without a trip to Willoughby Lake or Crystal Lake. In addition to spectacular skiing, Jay Peak State Forest offers warm weather hiking with panoramic views.

Lake MemphremagogIce Fishing - Lake Memphremagog becomes a virtual community in the winter as a large number of ice fishermen set-up their "ice-shanties". The same can be said of the exquisite, glacial formed Willoughby Lake in Westmore and Crystal Lake in Barton. Visit any of the general stores in the area and take a look at some of the photos of fish taken from these waters. If you can find a place to fish along the Willoughby River in Orleans next spring, you're lucky. People come from miles away to try their luck. Watch the rainbow trout leap over the falls! Spring
- Maple sugaring is the Northeast Kingdom's pride & joy. Many sugarhouses throughout the area invite vistors to drop by and sample their freshly made, delicious pure maple syrup.

Summer activities offer plenty of fun. Crystal Lake State Park in Barton, Maidstone State Park, or Brighton State Park in Island Pond provide a great place for camping and/or swimming. These are just a few suggestions. The Northeast Kingdom is interspersed with many lakes, ponds and rivers. Lake Memphremagog in Newport, is well known for boating, fishing and many other activities.

The The Old Stone House Museum is just a couple miles up the road from the famous Willoughby Falls. If you enjoy history, you'll find Brownington well worth the trip. This is Vermont at it's best. If you ever wanted to visit a picture perfect New England village, bring your camera and head for the Museum. There is also a scenic "lookout" point, where you can picnic or just enjoy the panoramic views of mountains and lakes.

What would a New England state be without covered bridges? We have plenty scattered throughout the area. One in Troy and five in Montgomery.

Foliage season - In the fall, the Green Mountains flare up with hues of red, orange and yellow. A sight that any leaf-peeper knows cannot be missed! The perfect time of year for a foliage nature walk/hike is mid-September to mid-October. You will not be disappointed.

Vermont has also served as the location of many motion pictures (some great & others not so great!) such as: Spitfire Grill, Cider House Rules, Where The Rivers Flow North and Ethan Frome, to name a few. Here's a complete list of movie filmed in Vermont.
