Vermont's Lost Ski Areas: LSC Ski Area

LSC Ski Area
Lyndon, VT
1963-1970

By Jeremy Davis of NELSAP

The Lyndon State College Ski Area opened during the 1963-1964 season, to provide skiing for the students at Lyndon State College. The rope tow was 300 feet long, with a vertical drop of only 60 feet. One slope provided night skiing and racing during local competitions. This ski area was, perhaps, the smallest ski area EVER in the state of Vermont. I have yet to find a rope tow area with a length of less than 300 feet or a smaller vertical drop. There was no snowmaking, and grooming was probably done by foot packing.

Nevertheless, the area must have been for the student population. This area operated during the transitional time for the college, as the college was in for a major expansion during the later 1960's and early 1970's. Growing Burke Mountain and the town's own Lyndon Outing Club Ski Area provided students with far more variety than this little area could deliver, so it closed after the 1969-1970 season.

Vail Hill has remained open, so it is still skiable.
