Shelburne Museum Open for Summer

Shelburne Museum is probably the number one "must-see" attraction in the State of Vermont. Over the past decades, school field trips from all around the area have journeyed to this wonderful museum. The S. S. Ticonderoga and the adjacent Colchester Reef lighthouse are easily two of the most impressive attractions. The lighthouse was built in 1871, dismantled and moved to the Shelburne Museum in 1952. This year, the foundation is getting a facelift and looking good. Lilacs are out so now is a great time for a visit.

Tribute to the Gold Star Families of Vermont was a Success

Scott and Penny Wheeler of Derby and their family have become known for donating hundreds of hours each year hosting numerous history and culture events that celelbrate the Northeast Kingdom and its people. They, with the support of the Elks Lodge in Derby, also host one large statewide gathering each year dedicated to honoring veterans and their families. Their event in 2007 honored the men and women who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The 2008 event paid respect to the men and women who served in World War II. The Derby family recently sponsored a 2009 event that honored Vermont's Gold Star Families - families who have lost loved ones in war. This event, was open to all members of the public, and included family members of veterans who have died in all of America's conflicts, not just the current ones.

Recession Continues in Vermont

Recent news report predict that Vermont will lag behind for a couple more years even if the US recession should bottom out and improve. These days it seems that more businesses and job are leaving Vermont, than coming in. As anyone who lives here knows, Vermont is not the most business friendly state in the union. So how can we turn this around? Apparently not anytime soon. The Vermont Legislature's democratic majority continues to waste time and taxpayer money on non-critical issues while jobs and incomes fall along the wayside. Their budget proposal calls for more taxes and spending, apparently oblivious to the black cloud of recession. With Governor Jim Douglas remaining as one of the few rational minds left in Vermont government, one has to wonder how bad things will become in Vermont if and when a democrat becomes governor. One thing is for certain, this ain't the Vermont our grandfathers worked hard to preserve. Better have lots of bucks to live here (and not afraid to share your money with politicians looking to take it away).
